iTONA Community Network
Farmers in each community form a chapter of the network. Members elect their own leaders, who confirm that each member is who they say and farms where they say. That is what makes a farmer’s record worth trusting.
What a chapter does
Bring farmers together
A chapter is the farmers of one community, meeting regularly to learn, share and organise.
Elect their own leaders
Members elect a President, a Secretary and a Verification Officer for a two-year term. CANWYF staff cannot stand.
Confirm members’ records
The three officers form the chapter’s Seal Council. At chapter meetings they confirm that members are who they say and farm where they say.
How a chapter starts
- Open meetingsWe hold open meetings in the community to explain what the network offers, with traditional leaders and farmers’ groups kept informed.
- A local coordinatorA coordinator from in or near the community is trained to enrol farmers and map their farms.
- Farmers enrolEach farmer’s identity, crops and farm boundary are recorded, with their consent. Their record starts as Provisional.
- Members elect officersOnce at least fifteen members have enrolled, they elect their President, Secretary and Verification Officer at an open meeting.
- Records are confirmedThe elected officers review each member’s record at a chapter meeting. Confirmed records become Sealed.
Two kinds of record
Anyone can check a farmer’s record on our verification page and see which kind it is.
Provisional
The farmer is enrolled and their farm has been recorded and checked by CANWYF. Their chapter’s officers have not yet confirmed it.
Sealed
The farmer’s record has been confirmed by the elected officers of their own chapter, with the date it was confirmed.

Keeping it fair
Always free
No one may charge a farmer to be enrolled or confirmed.
No one records their own
Coordinators and officers never record or confirm their own farm or a family member’s.
Decisions on paper
Officers vote on a signed sheet at the meeting, and every decision is kept on record.
Right of appeal
A farmer can ask for a decision to be looked at again.
The network is a membership network run with CANWYF. It is not a cooperative society: chapters do not collect savings, take deposits or lend money.
